Our present-day society has become highly dependent on a reliable electricity supply due to increasing networking and electronic information exchange requirements. This dependency will further increase and, together with the shift in the fuel mix – the substitution of other energy sources for electricity - and growing share of variable renewables in an ageing infrastructure, creates a ‘double risk trend’.

This paper summarizes DNV GL’s position on the reliability of future power grids. We are already working in different areas for and with customers to improve reliability and mitigate the double risk trend. We take a holistic integrated approach, combining electrical engineering technology with mathematical techniques, our knowledge and experience of testing and risk assessment and our understanding of markets and regulation.
