In another challenging year for the maritime industry people keep investing in the competencies of their staff during the down times. In the first half of the year 420 courses worldwide have been conducted with more than 4.600 attendees. Highly requested topics: Solutions to effectively improve the business performance.
The most requested courses until end of June were the Internal Auditor ISM-ISPS-MLC for Shipping Companies and the Designated Person Ashore (DPA) Training Course Around 570 customers were familiarized with these two topics and deepened their knowledge to enable them to fulfil the respective roles.
The second most popular courses were those related to risk management and accident and incident investigation in shipping. This goes along with Maritime Academy’s commitment to reduce the incidence of human error and improve the safe operation of ships. Accidents at sea lead to around 900 deaths per year – better qualified people who have learnt how to assess and minimize risks can only make a positive impact on these figures in the longer term.
One key goal of Maritime Academy is to share the expertise available in DNV GL with our customers and to find solutions to help them become safer, smarter and greener. As already noticed throughout last year the demand for in-house training and tailored training programmes rose substantially. Nearly one third of all in-house courses were tailored to suit customer or regional requirements.
Whether it is a standard course, customised crew training or a topic based on company-specific cases customers like to take advantage of training employees at their premises in order to save time and travelling expenses.
Studying with DNV GL and the WMU
New in the portfolio is a Postgraduate Diploma for Executive Maritime Management offered in cooperation with the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö. It addresses current topics that are critical in shipping today and provides a holistic education for maritime managers. The five modules cover key issues in the maritime industry, including safety, technology, financial, environmental and leadership issues.
